Do you love to travel? Or are you interested in traveling in
the future? I spoke with Dr. Forrest Baird of the Philosophy department, and he
had some advice for students who want to travel. Dr. Baird has gone to Europe
37 times and has led a Whitworth study trip to China 8 times, and he offered some wonderful advice to pass on to
students.
One of the first pieces of advice that Dr. Baird gave is to
conduct as much research as you can for any trip. The internet is a valuable resource for people who are planning on going abroad and can provide important details including:
- The location of sights that you are interested in seeing
- Recommendations for sights that you had never heard of before
- What days the sights are closed
- When they are open during the day
- How to get there, etc.
- Seeing where hotels are
- Seeing how far sights are from one another
- Providing a map for you to guide you.
- Alerting you the different metro/bus lines that can take you to your destination.
- Traveling around the city
- The safety of the city
- Where to avoid during certain times of the day
- What you might want to see, etc...
Another resouce that Dr. Baird recommends is Rick Steves. Rick Steves is a travel expert, and you might be familiar with his show on PBS that follows his adventures. He has turned his expertise into a valuable resource for travelers offering guidebooks and free podcasts of audio tours. Dr. Baird recommends Rick Steves because he lets travelers know information that would be interesting to know as you walk around a city without bogging you down with too many facts. For access to Rick Steves' app or free audio guides, here is a link: http://www.ricksteves.com/ae/ae_menu.htm.
Dr. Baird's final piece of travel advice is that when traveling, always expect for something to go wrong, and embrace it. You never know what might be unexpectedly closed, what trains might be cancelled due to unexpected railway strikes, or any other event that might occur. Dr. Baird mentioned that one of the best things that can happen to you during your travels is getting lost. While this is rarely according to plan, it is valuable, because you can find some of the most interesting places, little shops or cafes, and other hidden finds that you never would have seen otherwise. During unexpected moments, do not get discouraged but be flexible and find another adventure right around the corner!
A final piece of advice, that, I, myself would offer is to never be afraid to talk to people before, during or after your adventures. Before you go on your trip, it is beneficial to talk to friends, international students, or others that you know about traveling, because they could have valuable advice to offer. During your travels, do not be afraid to ask people around you for directions, good places to eat, etc... Traveling can be intimidating, but in my experience, I learned that there is always a friendly face who is willing to help or offer advice. After your travels, keep talking to people, because it can help you plan your next trip or you can even offer your newfound advice to someone who is about to set off on an adventure of their own.
Traveling is one of the greatest experiences that we can do in life. It challenges our comfort zones, invites us to experience new cultures and new places, and it helps us learn about ourselves simultaneously. While traveling is a great adventure, it is important that you prepare, be safe, and have fun :)
